British and American English
There are many differences between British and American spelling, both in general spelling rules and in individual words. Ae or e British English generally has the ae spelling, while the American English e is standard: British English: anaemia , anaesthetic, haemoglobin, etc American English: anemia, anesthetic, hemoglobin etc… In some other words, American English accepts both ae and e spellings: Aesthetics or esthetics Archeology or archaeology Encyclopedia and encyclopaedia Words that begins with aer- in British English also begin with aer- in American English eg. Aerobics, but note British English aeroplane, American English airplane ce, se some words that ends in ce in British English are spelt se in American English: British English: defence, offence, pretence American English: defense, offense, pretense British English: licence(noun), license (verb); practice (noun), practise (verb) American English: license (noun and verb), practice (noun and verb) -ise, -ize In verbs that in British English can end in either –ise or –ize (eg. equalize or equalize), in American English the ending is always spelt –ize. When the ending is spelt with a y, it is always spelt –yse in British English and –yze in American English British English: analyse, paralyse. American English: analyze, paralyze. Single and double L British English doubles a final l before a word-ending such as –ed or –ing, in American English the final l is not doubled British English: equalled, travelling, traveller, cousellor. American English: equaled, traveling, traveler, counselor On the other hand, in some words where British English has a single l, American English has ll British English: appal, distil, enrol, fulfil, skilful American English: appall, distill, enroll, fulfill, skillful. -logue, -log British English catalogue and dialogue, American English catalog or catalogue, dialog or dialogue. But in both British and American English, analog is the form used in computing: an analog computer Oe or e Oe in British English; usually e in American English British English: amoeba, diarrhoea, foetus American English: amoeba, diarrhea, fetus -our, -or Most words that end in –our in British English end in –or in American English British English: behaviour, colour, favour, falvour, harbour, honour, etc… American english: behavior, color, favor, flavor, harbor, harbor, honor, etc… In American English, glamour is the preferred spelling, but glamour is also correct. Single and double p In British English, the final p of kidnap and worship is doubled before a word-ending such as –ing, -ed and –er Kidnapping, kidnapped, kidnappers; worshipping, worshipped, worshipper In American English, spelling with one p or two p’s are equally correct.
